Installing boat flooring is Easier than you Think
Installing EVA foam boat flooring on your boat is a fairly simple process that requires only the right tools, supplies, and instructions.
Let’s first look at the tools you’ll need for this job.

- Tape measure
- Utility knife or carpet knife
- Scraper
- Mineral spirit/acetone
- Small clamp or weight
- Spatula
- Roller or stiff broom
- Rag
How to Install EVA foam boat flooring:
Step 1: Remove the Old Carpet
Tip: If you haven't already done so, remove the seats and fixtures. Mark where they came from so you can easily replace them later.
Remove the old carpet and use a scraper, mineral oil, and sandpaper to clean off any remaining glue residue (for sticky areas). Clean and dry all areas to be carpeted.
This is also a good opportunity to inspect the deck and areas below for water damage or hidden structural issues.
Step 2: Cut the Boat Flooring to Size
Before measuring and cutting your EVA foam boat flooring, unroll the boat flooring and place it in the sun for a few hours (between 65F-90F on a dry day).
Allowing the boat flooring to warm up softens the backing, making it more pliable and easier to handle, position, and cut.
Then use the oversized measurements to rough cut the boat flooring to approximate size. Lay the boat flooring on the boat, using weights or clamps to prevent shifting. Use a very sharp utility knife or carpet knife to tailor the boat flooring to fit exactly. Once it fits, clamp or weight the boat flooring on the left side (port side) only. Fold the boat flooring in half lengthwise (from bow to stern), exposing the right side of the flooring.
Tip: Always leave extra space when measuring. Marine flooring is directional, so each piece of marine flooring should be cut in the same direction. When measuring the area of marine flooring needed, be sure to include other areas that have marine flooring, such as walls and speakers, and may need to add marine flooring in the future. It is better to have more than less.
Remove seats and fixtures (mark the location and direction of each piece of marine flooring) to ensure accurate measurements.
Step 3: Apply Adhesive
Tip: Do not begin the following steps until you are sure you have 24-48 hours of dry weather and the temperature is between 65F – 90F.
Use a spatula to apply the boat floor glue to the back of the boat floor in a circular motion from front to back.
You want to apply a thickness equivalent to a thick coat of paint. Do not allow the glue to pool or leave any dry areas. For best results, allow the glue to become tacky before rolling the boat floor out to the glued side.
Be careful when laying the boat floor, once the glue touches the bottom of the boat, it will not come back out, so make sure you lay the boat floor flat with no wrinkles.
You can now remove the clamps and weight from the left side of the boat floor and fold the side you just glued over. Repeat the gluing process.
Use a roller or stiff broom from the center to all edges to remove bubbles and ensure good contact between the boat floor and the glue. Without this step, bubbles or lines may appear over time, or cracks may appear in certain areas of the boat floor.
The marine floor will begin to cure within 3-4 hours but should be allowed to dry completely (24 hours) before vacuuming, installing handrails and seating, or allowing people to walk on it. Wait 48 hours before using in water.
Step 4: Take your boat out to sea with your new EVA foam marine floor!
